One of my first, and frankly most impactful, jobs I had as a teenager was at Lafayette Nursing Home right here in North Kingstown. I worked part-time in the kitchen, making snacks, tea, sandwiches for the residents. My mother was a registered nurse there as well as other nursing homes in her impressive nursing career. Part of my work shift was spent handing out meals, which led me to talking to the residents. I learned a lot about being patient and being a good listener and that spending a few moments with an elderly person that may be lonely was a positive way of giving back to my community. Sadly, some of my daily stops passed away or were transferred to other nursing centers. I became familiar with the term “die peacefully,” which I suppose we all wish for our parents, grandparents when they reach that point medically speaking. It was an experience that made me respect the caregivers and institutions that work and care for our love ones in their advanced years.
In a previous article, I mentioned being a landmark driver. On the north end of Ten Rod Rd, where I grew up, is Roberts Health Centre. It is located across from the Wickford Commuter Rail Station, making it convenient for out of town visitors and their families who don’t drive. Being right off the highway and just minutes from Newport, Providence, even Connecticut, Roberts Health Center is an easy commute from anywhere in Rhode Island and surrounding areas. Roberts is a member of the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce and is one of the most respected names in the state of Rhode Island as a nursing and rehabilitation center. Interesting, as a sign of the times, Roberts Health Centre offers Free Wi-Fi for their patients, residents, and visitors. Owner Richard Catallozzi was kind enough to send me some additional information about his place of business, Roberts Health Centre.
