Reusable Shopping Bags At Dave’s Marketplace Help Support RI Community Food Bank

In recent weeks, the North Kingstown Blog has written about the amazing charitable work done by local organizations such as MAE Organization for the Homeless, the North Kingstown Food Pantry, and The East Greenwich Animal Protection League.  Charity comes in all shapes and sizes and can make a huge impact on the lives of others, especially around the holidays.  I was recently in Dave’s Marketplace here in North Kingstown and noticed a display rack with reusable bags.  The cashier mentioned that money collected for the bags goes to Rhode Island Community Food Bank, so I purchased one bag for home and one for my office.

I contacted the Rhode Island Community Food Bank this week and asked them about Dave’s, the bags, and the RI Food Bank.  I received a nice response back from Director of Annual Giving, Jill Gonsalves.  Here is an excerpt from her response.

Over the years, Dave’s Marketplace has been quite generous to the Food Bank.  We feel very fortunate to have their support.  This reusable shopping bag is their latest endeavor to help raise money for the Food Bank.  Proceeds from the sale of these bags help to fund our work of providing food to Rhode Islanders in need.

Each month, about 60,000 Rhode Islanders turn to us for food assistance.  Many of them are among the working poor.  While Rhode Island’s unemployment rate has dropped, people with part-time or low-wage jobs just don’t earn enough to cover all the bills and are still struggling to put food on the table.  In partnership with our statewide network of 167 member agencies, we focus on providing nutritious food that can be the basis for a healthy meal.  Of the 9.7 million pounds of food distributed last year, 2.4 million pounds was fresh produce.

By purchasing one of the reusable shopping bags with the Food Bank logo on it, Dave’s shoppers can help us to acquire quality, nutritious food that people need but can’t afford.  With the community’s support, we can ensure that no one goes hungry.  Thanks for supporting the Rhode Island Community Food Bank by purchasing a reusable shopping bag from Dave’s Marketplace.
