Many years ago, in a galaxy not so far away, I saw the very first Star Wars movie at a drive-in theater located just over the North Kingstown line in East Greenwich. Yes, there was a drive-in theater locally here and it was very well attended, especially in the summer months. This was where my family and I watched Luke, Han Solo, Darth Vader, and the amazing cast and characters of George Lucas battle it out for intergalactic supremacy. It was shown on a massive screen, which made the spaceships, battle scenes, odd characters, and overall experience so very impressive to a then 6 year old. Under the stars, outside, with tons of snacks to watch one of the greatest films in entertainment history.
The North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce Charitable Foundation is bringing back that tradition of the drive in theater with their line-up of “Movies on the Beach.” The “Chamber Foundation” as they are commonly known as, serves the public by “developing programs and events which promote charitable giving in the North Kingstown area.” Local businesses can take advantage of advertising opportunities, business promotion, and goodwill opportunities at events run and sponsored by the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce Charitable Foundation.
Next Friday, August 19th, The Chamber Foundation will be hosting “Star Wars, The Force Awakens” at the North Kingstown Town Beach. Admission is free. Food is available for sale from the Foundation: Sausage and Peppers, hot dogs, chowder, popcorn, cotton candy, Inside Scoop ice cream. Or you can pack a dinner and snacks and bring your own for the movie. Blanket seating available up front or bring a chair. The North Kingstown Town Beach has some picnic seating which is first come, first serve. Free parking at one of two lots or you can park in Wickford and walk to the beach. Kids activities, run by the local West Bay YMCA, are happening before the movie. The YMCA will be there with corn hole and other kids games. Let’s Read Rhode Island will have a reading tent set up. There will be face painting and little kid activities from children’s workshop. The movie starts around 8 or dusk time.
What an awesome idea and great way to spend a summer evening. Star Wars, the beach, family, snacks – should be a memorable night at the North Kingstown Town Beach. For more information, contact 401-294-6710. Please make special note of these great sponsors and support your local businesses!!!
