IN THE COMMUNITY

The Boy Scouts of America – Community Service, Camping, and Lasting Friendships

My son Harrison has grown up with several close friends from Kindergarten to 5th grade at Fishing Cove Elementary.  One of them, Cameron Boyd, was a member of Harrison’s Cub Scout troop for years.  I asked Cameron’s Mom, Leigh Anne Boyd, what her impressions of scouting were?  What would she say to someone thinking about joining scouts here in North Kingstown.  And how can someone, especially a new family to North Kingstown, benefit from the scouting program.  Here is an excerpt from our conversation along with some great photos of some active scouts in our area.  Notice the smiles in every photo.  My son had a great time in the scouting program and learned a ton of information that he will use for the rest of his life.
So Leigh Anne, why scouting?
When I moved to Rhode Island with my husband and two boys we didn’t know anyone.  All my family lived in another state and Rhode Island seemed to be a state where families were close and kept everyone busy!  My eldest son started kindergarten and made some friends.  He and his brother joined soccer teams and we started to get to know a few people.

Then one day, I saw signs to join scouting.  I wasn’t sure if this would be the right direction for us but I knew that this could be a good match for my boys.  I wanted a place that could, in the absence of family, provide support for how I wanted to raise my children.  So we signed up!

Not only have my boys come to love scouting, but I have too!  We found a place to forge lasting friendships with families who wanted their children to be connected to nature, be invested in their communities, and learn life lessons from one another.  It was the balance and connection my whole family needed in this crazy, screen filled and (at times) disconnected world of ours.

I urge you to try out scouting if you want a good place for your children to grow up where they are accepted for who they are, learn to connect with nature, and be an active part of their community.  You won’t regret it!
