North Kingstown Schools are blessed to have incredible music programs and music teachers. My children have all participated in music programs at Fishing Cove Elementary, Wickford Middle School, and now the North Kingstown High School. At each school level, there are concerts where parents, grandparents, neighbors, and friends can attend to listen to the student’s progress in their instrument of choice. These concerts always impress me – the teachers getting students to play together, the progress a student makes in his/her instrument over the school year, and the incredible turnout from loved ones there to support not only their child but the entire school. I find the talent of these NK kids to be truly remarkable.
I had an idea to promote the talented youth of North Kingstown via an open mic night event and presented it to Wickford Harbor Lights founder, Joellen Wunner. My idea centered around showcasing the talent of these young musicians I have been hearing for the past few years at school concerts. And to invite the rest of North Kingstown to listen in and hear how talented they are. With the enormous success of the Wickford Harbor Lights, I thought it was a great opportunity for a great crowd to see a roster of great young musicians. In addition, I want my children to learn about giving back to their community, so we decided on setting up a donation bucket with the proceeds going to the Special Olympics program right here in North Kingstown, a program which my son Griffin participated in for several years. After meeting Joellen and pitching her my idea, she agreed and the stage was set for Thursday October 27th. Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not cooperate and I reluctantly postponed the event.
The Cold Spring Community Center on the campus of the North Kingstown Town Beach will be the new venue for the 2016 NK Teen Open Mic Night. The event is open to the public, any teen who is enrolled in a North Kingstown school or private school who wishes attend is welcome. If you play guitar and want a play an original or cover song, bring your guitar. I will have two amps on site. If you are a drummer and want to show us your talent, I will have a full drum set up for you to jam on. If you sing, I will have a microphone for you to showcase your singing talent. There is no charge for admission and you can sign up for as many turns as you would like. The event will run from 6 pm to 8 pm on Thursday, November 10th. A donations bucket will be set up and once again the proceeds will go to the Special Olympics Program here in North Kingstown. Seating will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Bring your own snacks, drinks, and toe tapping shoes.
