RI Little League State Tournament Opening Weekend Was Hot, Hot, Hot

The forecast was accurate. Most weather stations, websites, the locals at the barber shop, the lifeguards at the Town Beach – they all predicted high heat with oppressive humidity to accompany it. And they were all right. The heat indexes were in the triple digits. It felt as hot as I can remember and the humidity was just insanely uncomfortable.

Rhode Island Little League State Tournaments began their double elimination play on Saturday. The four divisions left are the 10U, 11U, 12U, and Juniors divisions. The Senior Division has already crowned a winner – Elmwood Little League. Game times were adjusted Friday for safety purposes and so the players, coaches, families, and staff could prepare for the high heat expected over the weekend. Congrats to the leadership of the Rhode Island Little League for making such a grand effort to make the play on the field safer and for the fans in the stands. Parents and fans brought tents. Trees and structures blocking the sun were the “hot” places to sit and watch the games. Umpires brought coolers of water and placed them strategically behind bushes, over the left field fence, and in dugouts. Cooling towels, spraying fans, mist hoses – whatever it took to stay cool and hydrated. From what I could see from the games I attended, everyone was doing their best to stay safe in the heat.

Congrats to all the players, coaches, umpires, fans, families for braving the heat this past weekend at the Rhode Island State Little League Tournament. Great job by the volunteer staff at each of the host fields in getting the fields prepared, stocking the concession stands, helping out with parking, and being a great representative of Rhode Island baseball.

Good luck to all the teams this week in tournament play. Should be another great week of baseball here in Rhode Island.
