The Rhode Island American Legion League is designed for interscholastic school age baseball players to compete and play summer baseball against great competition. According to the official website of American Legion Baseball (www.legion.org/baseball/history) “American Legion Baseball enjoys a reputation as one of the most successful and tradition-rich amateur athletic leagues. Today, the program registers teams in all 50 states plus Canada. Each year young people, ages 13 to 19, participate. Since its inception in 1925, the league has had millions of players, including countless who have gone on to play in college and professional baseball, with 68 inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.“
The Rhode Island Chapter of American Legion Baseball includes 11 Senior Division teams and 15 Junior Division teams. These teams span the entire state of Rhode Island from Cumberland to South Kingstown to Middletown to West Warwick. Personal note, I played for American Legion Post 39 when I was a Senior at North Kingstown High School. It was an awesome experience and that summer of Legion ball really prepared me for college baseball. Here is how the regular season went for the Senior Division:
The Juniors Division is divided into three regions – North, South, and Central. There are 5 teams in each division. Here is how the Juniors Divisions shaped up this summer:
At the conclusion of the regular season, the state tournament for the Senior and Junior Divisions began. The Juniors Division Champion is Elmwood Post 20 of Cranston.
And the Seniors Division Champions for 2019 are Upper Deck 86/14 of Cumberland/Lincoln. Upper Deck went onto the New England Regional Tournament held in Worcester, MA. They finished with an impressive 2-2 record, making it to the quarterfinal round of the double elimination tournament.
Congratulations to all the players, coaches, volunteers, families, and leagues for another successful season of American Legion baseball here in Rhode Island.
