Located on the Providence campus of Johnson & Wales University, on the corner of Harborside Blvd and Save the Bay Dr. is the Scotts Miracle-Gro Sports Complex. This incredible sports complex located right on the Providence seaport features several sports fields to support student-athletes in sports like baseball, soccer, softball, lacrosse, and intramural sports offered by Johnson and Wales University. The team logo for JWU is the “Wildcats” and you can see a massive statue of a wildcat in front of their impressive “Wildcat Center” located just passed the entrance to the Scotts Miracle-Gro Sports Complex. Just doing some research on JWU through their website – http://www.jwu.edu – I was able to see inside the facilities as well as some wide shot photos of the fields all lit up at night. It was my first visit to JWU and I was really, really impressed by the campus and the sports facilities there.
I took a stroll around the JWU baseball field on a beautiful, unseasonable warm and windy day this past week. One of the great things about writing about baseball is the suggestions I get from page followers. One wrote to me about checking out this particular baseball field and I am so glad I did. This JWU baseball field is incredible. Great views all around the park with plenty of bleacher seating. There is a great view of the Providence seaport from behind home plate, with wind turbines circling, cargo ships going into and out of port, and the busy industrial area of Providence that supports many, many families here in Rhode Island.
Walking around the park, there is a fantastic view of the neighboring soccer fields, softball fields, and campus of Johnson and Wales. The grounds were in amazing shape and the press box looked like it was either recently built or just very well maintained. From behind home plate, I had to zoom into the centerfield flag showing “405” which means you have to hit one a very long way to center field to clear the fence. Coupled with the wind coming off the Providence seaport, a home run hit to centerfield at JWU’s baseball field is a Tremendous Accomplishment!!!
The Johnson and Wales Baseball team plays in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). Their roster features a nice mix of local Rhode Island talent from schools like LaSalle Academy, Bishop Hendricken High School, Tolman High School, Mt. Pleasant High School, and West Warwick High School, in addition to players from other regional states. Their season is underway and is starting “on the road” playing teams down south, which is a common theme with many Northeast baseball teams. JWU will play their first home game on Monday, March 16th vs. Mass Maritime. Game time is 4pm at their home park inside the Scotts Miracle-Gro Sports Complex.
For more information on Johnson and Wales baseball, visit JWU Baseball and join me this spring in checking out a game at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Sports Complex, Harborside Blvd, Providence. This was a fantastic Rhode Island Baseball Experience learning more about Johnson and Wales University and their incredible sports complex.
