CCRI or the Community College of Rhode Island has several campuses throughout Rhode Island. The Warwick Campus sits just off Route 113 across from the Rhode Island Mall and the recently vacated Toys R US store. Up the steep driveway to the main campus buildings, then down the hill and passed the main parking lot area sits the baseball field for the CCRI Knights Baseball team, Fell Field. Fell Field was my most recent stop in exploring Rhode Island baseball fields big and small.
The weather so far in March has been unseasonably warm and it has given the chance to explore Rhode Island baseball’s college teams like CCRI. CCRI has a long tradition of excellence in athletics, including their baseball team. Their teams are consistently competitive and churn out baseball players who continue their student-athlete careers at some of the top collegiate programs in the country. The Knights play in NJCAA Division III and have division titles, district championships, and are a frequent spot in the NJCAA DIII World Series.
With a wooden backdrop, other sports facilities, and the main campus surrounding the field, Fell Field sits in an enviable spot on the campus of CCRI. I walked the perimeter of the field on a blustery, yet comfortable March afternoon and took some photos. There are plenty of great seats and I loved the raised bleacher section just outside the third base line. The mound and batter’s box areas were covered in tarps to protect them from the elements. Overall, the field and grounds around the stadium looked really good for March. I can’t wait to see the field in full bloom this Spring.
The CCRI Knights Baseball team kicked off its season yesterday, March 5th, on the road at Lake Myrtle Park, Florida. Their schedule continues down south for the next week or so before heading north to start league play. Their first home game is Sunday, March 22nd at Fell Field vs Southern Maine. Here is a link to the CCRI Baseball page which includes schedule of games and current roster of CCRI Knights Baseball players. I wanted to mention that one of the Knights players, John DeRouin, has become a very active member of the Rhode Island baseball community as a mentor, teacher, and coach. DeRouin works at Hops Athletic Performance and utilizes video analysis, pitching and hitting software, and his many years of playing experience to help youth baseball players here in Rhode Island. I love his work and attention to detail. You can check out John’s coaching and drills on his Instagram page – @hops_pitching – where you can see video instruction and demonstrations, technical instruction, and baseball knowledge being passed down from to the next generation of RI baseball stars. Great work John!!!
Great visit to Fell Field in Warwick on the campus of CCRI. The Knights baseball team has a tradition of excellence not only in Rhode Island baseball but nationwide. These student-athletes will move on from CCRI and play for major college teams, summer baseball league teams like the Cape Cod League and the New England Collegiate Baseball League, having played for one of the best baseball colleges here in Rhode Island. I’m looking forward to even warmer days, the green grass, the trees in full bloom, and CCRI Knights baseball at Fell Field this Spring!!!
The RIBBE is The Rhode Island Baseball Experience. It is promoting the game of baseball here in the great state of Rhode Island for the entire baseball world to see. The RIBBE is positive stories, photos, videos, and responsible social media posts. The RIBBE is an information resource for families looking for an AAU team or a summer camp or a great place to buy a first baseman’s mitt. The RIBBE is a network of coaches, tournament directors, parents, leagues, and baseball junkies whose passion of the game of baseball is unquestioned. I believe that providing expert analysis, information and directions to ballfields, and coaching advice from some of the top RI baseball minds will help promote the game of baseball here in RI to a whole new level.
