The George Donnelly Sunset League, like every other baseball organization here in Rhode Island, was hopeful that Summer, 2020 baseball would happen. Momentum started happening in early June for participation sports like baseball to begin organizing. And the announcement that baseball could be played in Phase 3 came in late June, early July. The Sunset League, in operation for over 100 years here in Rhode Island, was off and running in early July with a full schedule of games. First game was July 8th – Westcott vs Brother’s – and the Sunset League was officially a part of Rhode Island summer baseball once again.

Sharing the famed Cardines Field in Newport with the Newport Collegiate Baseball League, as well as sharing players, the Sunset League teams logged about 15 regular season games this summer, then onto the playoffs. Post season awards were announced this week on social media pages and the website of the George Donnelly Sunset League. Here are the awards handed out to players from this summer’s league play:

  • Rookie of the Year – Sean Helfrich, LaSalle Academy, Wheaton College
  • Playoff MVP Isaiah Rivera – Tolman High School, Rhode Island College
  • Pitcher of the Year – CJ Tsoumakos, LaSalle Academy, Rhode Island College
  • MVP – Alex Martinez, Cranston East High School, Rhode Island College

Congrats to all the players, coaches, and families who navigated through a very unusual summer baseball season to play in the George Donnelly Sunset League.
