Andrew Tucker Field in Cumberland is just one of the baseball fields being utilized this weekend for the Firecracker Baseball Labor Day Classic. Tucker Field is located off Mendon Road, just about a mile from the 295 exit off ramp. It is the home field for Cumberland High School and also houses other recreational fields and courts. I took the drive up from North Kingstown yesterday to watch two Rhode Island baseball organizations play in the 15/16U Division of the tournament – The Ocean State Outlaws vs Providence Sports and Leadership.
Tucker Field has a ton of foul ground. You can see from this photo I took in the bleachers along the first base line that any ball hit foul is in play and a potential OUT!
The sun was shining bright with just a little bit of wind. Blue skies, puffy clouds, and really ideal conditions for baseball in September.
Both teams were aggressive on the base paths. Both the Outlaws and PSL showed good speed on the bases, even pulling off a double steal in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
The bats for both the Outlaws and PSL were out in full force on Saturday. I saw a few really hard hit balls and one that was hit over the left field fence for a 3-run homer.
Family, friends, and fans found seats in the bleachers along the first and third base line, up the hill from the backstop, and in the slope of the hill behind the first base line. It was a warm, comfortable day, low humidity and lots of sunshine. I stayed a few innings to watch this Outlaws vs PSL game, which featured a ton of Rhode Island High School baseball talented underclassmen. Providence Sports & Leadership got the win on Saturday and both the Outlaws and PSL are back in action today. The Outlaws play at 4:45pm at Rhode Island College. PSL plays at 3:45 back at Tucker Field, Cumberland.
Good luck to all the players, coaches, and families playing this weekend in the Firecracker Sports Labor Day Classic.
