Local Rhode Island Talent Help Propel Wheaton College Baseball Team to NEWMAC Title

Wheaton College is located in Norton, Massachusetts and their baseball team is a member of the New England Women’s and Mens Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Wheaton’s 2022 baseball schedule included games against teams from the State of Rhode Island – Rhode Island College (March 31) and Salve Regina (April 7), both non-conference games and both wins for Wheaton. It also included 28 other wins for a season total of 30 (Overall record is 30-10), with the latest win securing the 2022 NEWMAC Baseball Title. Congratulations to all the Wheaton College Baseball players, coaches, and families. And come to find out, many of these players are from Rhode Island.

Over the 2022 season, proud parent and Baseball Mom Jen Pierce, whose son Max Pierce (Scituate) pitches and plays for Wheaton College, has been emailing me updates touting the Rhode Island connection. I just love this line from a previous message, “Thought you might be interested to know that although Wheaton College is in Mass, they’re loaded with local RI boys (12) and they’re good.” And this one from this morning, “OMG best Mother’s Day ever. Wheaton and its 12 Rhode Island players won their conference, and I was the luckiest baseball mom to have my kid on the mound for the last out. We’re on to Regionals!!”

Jen messaged me the Rhode Island players and here they are listed with their hometowns and high schools in parentheses, if different from their hometown:

  • Senior Jake Studley – Barrington (Moses Brown)
  • Senior Drew Spirito – Cranston (Cranston West)
  • Senior Dom Cunha – Lincoln
  • Junior Nick Croteau – Cumberland
  • Junior Zack Clesas – Johnston
  • Junior Andrew Clesas – Johnston
  • Junior Max Pierce – Scituate
  • Soph AJ Guindon – Coventry (Bishop Hendricken)
  • Soph AJ Ucci – Warwick (Toll Gate)
  • Freshman Jackson Walsh – Cumberland
  • Freshman Jack Kriz – Barrington
  • Freshman Jared Walker – Wakefield (La Salle Academy)

Here is a recap of the championship game (click on the highlighted link) from the Wheaton College Baseball page – NEWMAC Title Game. Wheaton College is managed by Head Coach Eric Podbelski, assisted by Jimmy Smith, Ryan Parker, Pete Pasquarosa, Matt Milano, and Patrick Santorella. Wheaton moves on to the Regionals, with ultimate goal of a National Championship run, which is scheduled to start June 3rd in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Wow, what a season and good luck to all the Wheaton College baseball players, coaches, and families as you make a name for yourselves in the Regionals!!!
